Challenge: My emails have strong open rates, but the click-through rates are low.



A good email content calendar includes various types of emails, i.e. solicitations, quarterly newsletters, ways to get involved, etc. If one type of email has a higher click-through than others, consider what you can learn from it:

  • Apply the formatting of your highest-performing emails to other email types.

  • Adapt the language and phrasing in underperforming emails to mirror those with top click-through rates.

  • Re-work your content calendar to include more emails with 2+ different types of content, i.e. a quarterly newsletter that also includes event announcements.

  • Run a content test. Many mailing programs allow for A/B testing email content performance. A small portion of your audience receives either the A or B version before the email with the top-performing content is sent to the majority of your mailing list.


Re-evaluate the Call-To-Action (CTA) in your emails. We always suggest providing multiple and varied CTAs in your emails.

  • If you’re asking for donations, include multiple touchpoints for the recipient to take action. For example, include a donate button and also hyperlink and bold the question where you ask the recipient for a donation. 

  • Give the recipient options to engage beyond donating. A recipient must be given multiple ways to engage with your organization in each email you send. When thinking about CTA variety, consider options that require different levels of commitment from the recipient (both in terms of time and money). 

  • Go Evergreen with your CTAs. Develop 3-5 essential actions that you include at the bottom of every email you send. You can call them “Ways to Support Us Right Now” to create a sense of urgency. Donating should always be an option. Other great actions could be, following your social media channels, forwarding the email to a friend, or signing a pledge.
